Tommy Smith | End Of Season Q&A | 12.06.2025 |

Defender Tommy Smith discusses last season and previews the upcoming campaign.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a team perspective?

TS: It was obviously a tough season, being relegated, but at no point did we ever throw the towel in. We gave our absolute best every single game. Obviously, there were tough moments and there were also good moments as well. Obviously, in the end, it finished off disappointing of how the league table was.

DK: Would you say you've still had a positive season personally?

TS: I thought I'd done all right. I mean, I think when teams get relegated, I think it's hard to sort of have a really good season individually. I thought I'd done all right. Nowhere near as well as I think I can, but I don't think that I struggled. I thought it was a decent performance, to be fair. I think at the start, it took us a while to sort of climatise ourselves to the league. I thought that reflected in the first few months leading up to Christmas. I thought from the New Year, I thought we actually did okay. I thought a lot of our performances weren't bad. We were picking up results. Obviously, at that point, the pressure was off us, really. There's no pressure when you're expected to go down. That was how we probably should have came into the season, with that pressure sort of off us, but I felt it affected us the first few months, maybe.

I just thought we were going up the league and not many players have faced that level before. It might have just been just the first couple of months, I think. It was for everyone who was trying to find their feet. I think towards the end of the season, we definitely showed our worth in the league. If we would have started like that the whole way through, I think we would have definitely stayed up.

DK: The previous season (2023/24), our home form was really good, I'm guessing next season (2025/26), your aim as a team and individually is to return back to that form?

TS: Yeah, definitely. It was tough. We found actually playing away, I think, this season, probably picking up better results away than we did at home, which was a little bit strange, but understandable probably as well when there's all these massive grounds and everything like that. We did struggle at home this year, and we're definitely looking to high man away this season coming up, so definitely perform better.

DK: What would you say your highlights are from the season?

TS: Obviously, the team performances. Like everyone's been saying, you've got the Hereford game, or rather the Warrington and Hereford Saturday-Tuesday, I think it was towards the start of the season. It was a really, really good feeling, a really good moment. Playing at all them grounds in general, really good experiences, whether we won them or lost them. They were still really good experiences. Obviously, on a personal note, it was nice picking up my first goal as well, so that was something that I'm quite proud of. We obviously spoke about that goal at the time.

DK: Looking back at that, that must be the best goal you've scored?

TS: Yeah, it would probably be the best goal I've scored, yeah. I'm quite confident, probably, to be fair, hopefully, this season. I'm going to be picking up a few more, hopefully.

DK: I know those were friendlies, but technically that's not the only goal you've scored for the club.

TS: No, they all count, exactly. Exactly, they all count. Looking back at those, those were good finishes as well. I think it was hard this season. I think we were on the back foot quite a lot of the time. I think everyone felt that as well. I thought we gave it our all this season. I don't think anyone would have even dreamt of throwing the towel in. At no point did we ever even think about going down. Until the last game, we always thought we had a chance.

DK: Yeah, and now that you've all got experience at that level, you know what the expectation is.

TS: Yeah, it makes us hungry to get back there. All the experiences, we want to be back there. That's where we want to be now. We're definitely going to give it our best again this season. So, that's something the aim is definitely to get back there, one way or another. I think it has to be (the mindset). I think when you come down, I think the aim is always to go back up, no matter who you are. If you spent the last season in the league above, that should be the aim, to get back there, no matter what the squad's looking like or what the situation is at the club. I think you should always be looking to get back to where you were last season. Obviously, the Premier Cup would be nice as well, like it was the season before. Promotion from the league is definitely the main target.

Obviously, when I came in, I don't think anyone was expecting to win the title, considering the season before. I'm not sure where they finished, but I think it was near the bottom half. Yeah, so I think it was a bit of a, well, it wasn't a shock because I think we fully deserved it, but it would have been a shock from where we were at the start of the season. Then going from winning the league to dominating most teams week in, week out, to then going from one end of the spectrum to the other is always tough. I guess it's similar to how Ipswich played this season and from last season, to be fair. It's tough, but that's experiences. You've got two really good experiences in two years, and now it just makes you more hungry to get back to where it was.

DK: Yeah, speaking about Ipswich, it's kind of rather ironic that Needham and Ipswich last couple of seasons have mirrored each other.

TS: Yeah, it is a bit strange. It is a bit strange, yeah. Both struggled this season, but the season before, both were very, very good.

DK: Are there any other standout moments on or off the pitch?

TS: I mean, obviously the journeys and all that were good experiences with the lads on the bus, but nothing really that stands out.

DK: What is the biggest takeaway from the season that you'll forever remember?

TS: Probably just the experience, really. Probably the grounds that we played at. Not everyone plays at grounds like that, so I think that's definitely the biggest experience and a moment to look back on. This league is completely different to how I played at Ipswich. It's a very physical league. It's loads of experienced players and very, very good players as well, but I really enjoyed it. It was really good fun.

Kyle Hammond | End Of Season Q&A | 10.06.2025 |

Kyle Hammond reflects on the previous campaign and looks ahead to his fifth season with the club.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a team perspective, there must be a lot of pride?

KH: Having time to reflect on the season I think we all done ourselves proud and never gave up, no one really gave us a chance but I personally think we surprised a lot of teams and I think it came ultimately down to not being quite good enough in both boxes. But overall even though the end result wasn’t what any of us wanted I really enjoyed the season.

DK: How did you find the season from a personal perspective?

KH: From a personal side the intensity of the games were much higher than I expected and the season before so took me a while to get up to speed and with an injury at the start of the season didn’t help that. After that I thought I did okay some good games some average but never gave up and always gave my all.

DK: What are your highlights from the season?

KH: For me it was Oxford City game at home where I was involved in all 4 goals probably my best game of the season and it was a game we had to win.

DK: What was the best ground you played at this season?

KH: Chester and Scunthorpe’s.

DK: Biggest takeaway from season that you'll remember forever?

KH: Probably scoring a worldie free kick against Southport which is Needham's first ever goal at step 2 and mine!

DK: Were there any other standout moments/games on/off the pitch?

KH: Hearing Scunthorpe fans singing their song before kick off was pretty special.

DK: Having now been at the club for four seasons now and played a huge part in the club's recent history, how would you describe the journey so far?

KH: I’ve loved every minute of it. I always had an eye on Needham when I was at my previous clubs and now having been here for 4 years it was the best decision I made. Great club only getting bigger and better. So many good people in and around the club. And every year I’ve been at the club we’ve broken some sort of record with FA Trophy run, FA Cup run, winning Premier Cup after Premier Cup, winning the league and then playing step 2. And doing all this with very good friends makes it even sweeter.

DK: What are your targets for next season?

KH: Promotion!!

Ben Smith End Of Season Q&A | 02.06.2025 |

Reserves defender Ben Smith reflects on the season and discusses how the Academy has progressed in the last few seasons.

DK: What did you make of the season from a team perspective?

BS: In my opinion it was a great season for a team perspective I wasn’t here before December as you know but I watched a few games before then and from then to now yoh would think its a different team the way we play and results we have got prove just why reserves teams like us deserve to be in the league we are and deserve to be taken more seriously.

DK: How would you sum up the season from a personal view point?

BS: It was a topsy turvy one for me to put it straight haha, started off the season at another club didn’t fully work out had some great experiences though but just wasn’t to be however I came back to Needham around Christmas and my season was only on the up from that point it helped me a lot coming back and being settled again so in the end the season was a success.

DK: Can you pick 4 highlights from the season, what are they and why?

BS: Firstly I'd say making my Fa cup debut would be one as it’s such a prestigious competition across England and to say you’ve played it in it’s a nice feeling, secondly on a personal note playing so many games alongside your brother is a big one for me we’ve grown up together and learnt everything kind of together is massive, Thirdly, getting to a record points tally with the ressies is a great achievement for a group so young most being there first year in the men’s game it felt good to be a part of something that helped towards that and lastly although not really my own highlight seeing the 18’s beat Sudbury and won the 18’s cup was so nice to see knowing you play with them boys every week you can feel a bit part of helping them on there way to that and who doesn’t love a win against Sudbury in a big game hey!

DK: Did any games standout to you from this season?

BS: Has to be the last two games of the season I would say beating Leiston and Sudbury back to back in the space of 3 days felt good because as everyone knows they're the two teams around the area with the same set up as us and the end of the season games is when you can see the true level of teams and we proved we can beat them both comfortably.

DK: Having played for the Academy for a few seasons now, how would you describe the progress not just yourself individually but as a team?

BS: I’ve loved playing for the academy every year I’ve been here but in terms of development this year has to be the best year I’ve seen come from what most would say was being maybe afraid of the step up to now the boys embrace everything and I think we can be up there next season.

DK: What targets do you have for next season?

BS: For me I want to be the best version of myself and be the fittest fastest strongest version of myself for everyone to see and make a difference to the team next year, of course you have your personal targets of aiming to fight for a chance higher up with the firsts but I know there’s work to do to get to that point and i believe im in the right place with the right coaches to help me achieve that and help push me in that direction. And of course I'd love the ressies to finish in and around mid table we are more than capable and i beleive we will smash it this season Here’s to another good season and a lot of success 👊🏻.

Kellen Fiddy | End Of Season Q&A | 01.06.2025 |

Kellen Fiddy reflects on the season for the Academy.

DK: What did you make of the season from a team perspective?

KF: This season has been a real good learning experience for all of us boys making the big step up from youth football into the men’s game which was definitely tough and we did struggle for the first half of the season, we were a bit hard dons by with the amount of injuries we faced which I struggled with myself however that’s part of football and the good squad depth throughout the under18s and reserves had to play a part. The coaching staff have taught everyone of us a lot and given us the best possible advice for a positive outcome.

DK: How would you sum up the season from a personal view point?

KF: For me this season has been very tough, being out for 6 months of the season after working hard over the summer to perform and show my abilities, having to watch training and games from the sidelines wasn’t a nice feeling but the help from Manty and Ben and support from the lads helped me get back out there as quick as possible, I feel like I’ve got a lot more to give next season and express more of my qualities.

DK: Can you pick 3 highlights from the season (Res/U18s), what are they and why?

KF: My first highlight would be my first game back from injury for the reserves, we played Framlingam away which is by no means an easy game and to score on my return in a well fought 2-2 draw is definitely a personal highlight. Another highlight has to be the Midweek cup final Win on penalties, what an achievement for the club and i couldn’t imagine a better group of lads and staff to win it with. Heading back to the pre season Trip in July we had a good few days in Wales training and playing a team out there which was a quality experience and definitely brought the team closer together.

DK: How did it feel to be the first Needham side to lift the Suffolk U18 Midweek Cup and what did you think of the Final?

KF: Yeah, what a feeling to be the first Needham side to lift the Suffolk under 18s cup it was a really proud moment for us boys and it’s nice heading into the off-season with some silverware to show for the amount of effort everyone involved has put in over the course of the season, we are hungry to retain our status as holders and we have go out this season looking to win it again..

DK: What was going through your mind during the game/shootout?

KF: Walking up to the spot you have to be confident try and block out all other noise and focus on your technique and where you’re going to put it however i couldn’t help but think back to my miss in the semi final, however i used it to motivate me to make sure i finished this one off as i knew the horrible feeing of missing.

DK:How did it it feel to score a penalty in the final?

KFb Yeah a feeling of accomplishment and relief after i slotted my penalty in the final, after missing mine in the semi final that feeling still looked over me, however i trusted in my confidence and abilities to put the ball in the back of the net from 12 yards, taking the 6th penalty really has some pressure as if i had’ve missed that would’ve been it.

DK: Did any games standout to you from this season?

KF: Yeah i think the main game this season that stood out has to be the cup final the hard work everyone put into it we felt like we deserved the victory in the end. I’m very proud of everyone and we got from it what we put in, and you only win trophies if you’re work ethic is top level throughout the whole season so yeah a big credit to everyone involved and we’re all looking forward to next season.

DK: What targets do you have for next season?

KF: Next season my main aim is to continue to work hard throughout every training session and game giving my everything to stay Fit and contribute as much as possible to the team which is a non negotiable really, however i would like to reach double figures in both goals and assists, as a midfielder i need to keep getting my numbers up to cement my place in the team which is ultimately what everyone is working for.

Luke Ingram | End Of Season Q&A | 31.05.2025 |

Record appearance maker and goalscorer Luke Ingram reflects on the 2024/25 season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a team perspective, there must be a lot of pride?

LI: I think as a team we gave it everything we could, the lack of high level experience probably showed up in the end, but no one can say we didn’t give it our all at all times, proud of everyone, the club gave a it a right go, and we will be back!

DK: How did you find the season from a personal perspective?

LI: I absolutey loved every minuite, travelled the country with great friends playing at amazing grounds, what more can you ask for. I could have contributed more but it’s all a learning curve!

DK: What are your highlights from the season?

LI: Scunthorpe away, minus the red card of course! I’ll never forget they’re fans singing their song just before kick off, still gives me goosebumps thinking about it!

DK: What was the best ground you played at this season?

LI: Atmosphere would be Scunthorpe. Unfortunately I was injured for the Hereford away game, that was amazing by all accounts! Kings Lynn wasn’t bad either, taking stick, and giving it back!

DK: Biggest takeaway from season that you'll remember forever?

LI: Again, Scunthorpe away, I’ll never ever forget it, but most of all, doing what we never expected possible with my pals!

DK: How it did feel to win the Top Goalscorer (for the season and all-time) award in a historic but tough season?

LI: It felt amazing to finally get it over the line, unfortunately it didn’t help us achieve our goal, but I wanna extend it now and make it impossible to eclipse!

DK: Do any games standout, if so why?

LI: Scunthorpe of course, the 1-0 win away at leamington was a big win on the night! All great days!

DK: Looking back at the goals you scored, which one stands out as your favourite?

LI: Probably the winner at home to Chorley, felt such a big moment in the season and to score a winner late on is always great!

DK: What are your targets for next season?

LI: Plain and simply, score more goals, make more goals, and have this side back around the top of the league! … just watched the Champs League final, hopefully we can take a bit from PSG, great to watch, and absolute work horses for the team!

Tom's doing unbelievable work already, when have you ever seen us signs any players before pre season? Clubs putting the stand and other things together, what a time to be part of Needham Market, just remember where we’ve come from! So excited for the coming season!

Ben Hunter | End of Season Q&A | 20.05.2025 |

Ben Hunter reflects on his first season with the Marketmen, and previews 2025/26.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a team perspective, there must be a lot of pride?

BH: It’s obviously always disappointing getting relegated but think we can come away with our heads held high as we weren’t a million miles away, no one expected us to stay up and we almost did.

DK: How did you find the season from a personal perspective?

BH: Personally I loved it, it was the best season I’ve had to date, all the games are really competitive and a big step up from anything I’ve ever done before, think it’s given not just me but everyone else the hunger to get back there.

DK: What are your highlights from the season?

BH: Think the highlights are playing against all the big clubs, would probably say occasion wise Scunthorpe but as a occasion and a result I'd say Hereford, 2 and a half thousand on a Tuesday night and to play them off the park made it even better.

DK: What was the best ground you played at this season?

BH: Scunthorpe without a doubt, was the best experience I’ve ever had in football.

DK: Biggest takeaway from season that you'll remember forever?

BH: I think knowing that we done ourselves proud is probably the best thing to take away from the season and also being able to say in years to come I played in one of the highest finishing non league teams from this area ever!.

DK: Any other standout moments on/off the pitch?

BH: The standouts on the pitch are the games at Scunthorpe, Hereford, Chester, Kidderminster but also just some great memories with friends travelling up and down the country that I will never forget.

DK:  You've quickly became a fans favourite at the club, which must be pleasing?

BH: It’s obviously nice to get recognition, like I said it has been my favourite and best season I’ve had in my career, also Can’t thank all the fans at the club who have made me feel so welcome in my first year and looking forward to the next now.

DK: What are your targets for next season?

BH: Promotion.

Keiran Morphew | End Of Season Q&A | 19.05.2025 |

Captain Keiran Morphew reflects on the season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a team perspective, there must be a lot of pride?

KM: Yes for sure there is a lot of pride. I think it would have been easy for players and staff to leave the club and probably pick up more money elsewhere for less travel, instead pretty much everyone stuck together and never gave up.

DK: How did you find the season from a personal perspective?

KM:  Overall, I absolutely loved it. The travelling was easy, the crowds and grounds we played at were superb. On the pitch there were ups and downs but probably the same with everyone, I thought we grew in to it and played some nice games.

DK: What are your highlights from the season?

KM: Scunthorpe away was wicked and also winning away at Hereford was a standout memory.

DK: What was the best ground played at this season?

KM: Scunthorpe again. Their fans singing the club song before kick off was great and our travelling fans singing all game as well. Even their supporters said after the game that we should be proud of the support they gave us.

DK: Biggest takeaway from season that you'll remember forever?

KM: Just the experience as a whole was unforgettable. A tight knit club, containing 7 of my best mates, some of which I have been playing with for up to 12 years, sharing the pitch against some top non league clubs at a level the club has never been to before. I don’t think many people can say that.

DK: Any other standout moments on/off the pitch?

KM: Getting headbutted was a new one, won’t forget that haha.

DK: Do any games standout, if so why?

KM: Kidderminster away made me feel like I had been wasting my time playing football. They absolutely battered us.

DK: Once again you've contributed some important goals this season, which must be pleasing?

KM: Well they’re worthless now but could have been important at the time. I like scoring but prefer defending anyway haha.

DK: What are your targets for next season?

KM: I want something to play for at the end of the season and to get our hands on the Premier Cup again!

Jamie McGrath | End Of Season Q&A | 15.05.2025 |

Jamie McGrath reflects on the season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season, there must be a lot of pride?

JMcG: (Team) Yeah a lot of pride but also ultimately a lot of disappointment. We didn’t disgrace ourselves by any means but in the dressing room we knew that that was never gonna be the case with the group we’ve got. But yeah definitely some real proud moments in there as well. (Personally) It was tough. The league was so hard, probably even harder than I expected to be. And it definitely took us a while to adjust. I felt like I started pretty well but wasn’t quite getting the goals, then had a really annoying quad injury around Christmas time that I just couldn’t get rid of - and then had some decent performances in the second half of the season. But I’m always my own harshest critic, I definitely wanted to do a lot more in terms of goals and assists. I still really enjoyed a lot of the season though, it was an unreal experience at times.

DK: What are your highlights from the season?

JMcG: The one that stands out is Hereford, was obviously great to score and win that day but just in terms of the occasion, the crowd, how well we played that day. It gave us a real boost after a tough start. Chester away was another one, a great battling point against top of the league at the time.

DK: What was the best ground played at this season?

JMcG: I think it’d have to be Scunthorpe, although I did love Herefords ground.

DK: Biggest takeaway from season that you'll remember forever?

JMcG: I just thought it was insane how our fans continued to travel up and down the country, continued to make noise and support us. We know how expensive it is, how long the journeys are and we really do appreciate it. Seeing them in the corners of grounds making the noise they made at places like Scunthorpe, Hereford, Kidderminster will always stick with me for sure.

DK: Any other standout moments on/off the pitch?

JMcG: Ingers last minute winner at home to Chorley was definitely a highlight. Kept the dream alive, and Reggie’s winner away at Alfreton, that was unreal after being 2-0 down!

DK: Do any games standout, if so why?

JMcG: Other than the obvious ones I’ve mentioned Oxford at home was brilliant, playing free flowing football and scoring goals - a couple of weeks after doing the same at Farsley. It was a great period during the season.

DK: Once again you've contributed some important goals this season, which must be pleasing?

JMcG: Few more would’ve been nice!! But nah it was tough for all of the forward players this year I think and it was always gonna be. But yeah nice to score some important goals of course.

DK: What are your targets for next season?

JMcG: Go straight back up. Simple as that. We’re under no illusions of how tough that will be but if we take what we’ve learnt from this season, approach every game with the right attitude, I have no doubts that we’ve got the quality in the dressing room to have another very successful season!

Charlie Smy | End Of Season Q&A #2 | 10.05.2025 |

Academy midfielder Charlie Smy reflects on the season, including winning Suffolk U18 Midweek Cup.

DK: What did you make of the season from a team perspective?

CS: I think this season has been very good from a team perspective, mostly because of all the lads being 16 and coming into a tough men’s league and being able adapt fairly well to the challenge. The improvement from the start of the season to the end was quite evident as in the last 15 or so games, we managed to get some half decent results against some very good teams including wins over our rivals Sudbury and Leiston.

DK: How would you sum up the season from a personal view point?

CS: From a personal perspective, I’ve really enjoyed this season especially as it’s my first in men’s football. I feel that I’ve learnt a lot from my coaches and have experienced some very good moments with a great group of lads, such as winning the county cup at Colchester's stadium.

DK: Can you pick 4 highlights from the season (Res/U18s), what are they and why?

CS: The first highlight from our season I would say is our first reserve win against Dussindale, it was big 3 points and a great show of character from the boys. The second has got to be our fa youth cup run, as we beat some very good teams in the competition and were one game off the first round. My third highlight of the season was our county cup quarter final game against Lowestoft as we had a few key player missing for this game and were up against a strong side who we managed to beat 4:0. My fourth and final highlight for the season is pretty self explanatory as it’s the county cup final against Sudbury. This win was a great achievement for the boys playing in a great stadium in front of a good amount of fans, something I’m sure all of us will remember for a long time.

DK: How did it feel to be the first Needham side to lift the Suffolk U18 Midweek Cup and what did you think of the Final?

CS: It’s an unbelievable feeling to win such an important game on such a big stage and it’s even more special for the team being the first Needham team to lift the cup in the clubs history. The experience of playing in a great stadium like Colchester and winning is something everyone involved will always remember.

DK: What was going through your mind during the game/shootout?

CS: I tried to treat the game like any other and just enjoy being able to have the opportunity to play in such a big game in front of a decent crowd. During the shootout obviously I was a bit nervous but I backed the boys throughout and was obviously buzzing to get the win.

DK: How did it it feel to score a penalty in the final?

CS: It’s an unbelievable feeling and such a relief seeing the ball hit the back of the net.

DK: Did any games standout to you from this season?

CS: The main standout game from the season is always going to be the win in the final especially as we were 2:0 down and Showed great character to get back into the game. It was a very entertaining game with loads of different emotions , with us coming out on top and winning on pens.

DK: What targets do you have for next season?

CS: For the 18s, I’d really like to get to the first round in the fa youth cup and be able to play against a good pro academy team. For the reserves our target is to carry on our form from the end of last season into the start of next season seeing how high we can get up the table.

DK: Congratulations on winning a couple of awards at Presentation Night, how proud and delighted are you to have been recognised within your team?

CS: Yeah, its a very good feeling and is something I’m proud of. It means a lot coming from the team as well.

Brad Smith | End of Season Q&A | 09.05.2025 |

Reserves/Under-18's defender Brad Smith reflects on the season.

DK: What did you make of the season from a team perspective?

BS: It’s been a season full of positives from a team perspective the lads have come along way from the first day we came in for pre-season and it’s really shown the progression we’ve made from the last 6 or 7 results for the reserves. It’s a real positive going into next year because we can really push on as a team and challenge every team in the league.

DK: How would you sum up the season from a personal view point?

BS: I feel it’s been a really positive season for me and I’ve learnt a lot about my own game and feel like I’ve developed massively throughout the year. I’ve really enjoyed this season working with a top group of lads and a group of coaches who put a lot of work in for us and push us to the max.

DK: Can you pick 4 highlights from the season (Res/U18s), what are they and why?

BS: Winning our first reserves game was a great feeling within the group because it showed we could put up a fight. Then the fa youth cup run was a great experience for all of the lads a few tough games and then going and experiencing a completely different environment where there was a lot of pressure on the lads away infront of a fair few fans. Then the last two reserves game were top beating two rivals and really showing how much we’d come on as a team. And then I think the obvious one is winning the u18 county cup for the first time in the clubs history it was a massive achievement for the lads and you don’t get many nights like that in football so it was special.

DK: How did it feel to be the first Needham side to lift the Suffolk U18 Midweek Cup and what did you think of the Final?

BS: It’s an unbelievable feeling and one that the whole group should be so proud of being a mix of 1st years and u16 players against a near enough full side of second years. It was a lively game, took us lads 15 minutes to wake up but after that I thought we took good control of the game and created a lot of opportunities but we couldn’t quite capitalise to finish the game off but to go on and win on penalties is the best feeling u can have in football.

DK: What was going through your mind during the game/shootout?

BS: For me it was just playing the game like it was any other and not thinking of the occasion because if u focus on where u are and what’s at stake that’s when the nerves start to kick in but I thought the lads handled the situation very well and all had a great mentality going into the game.

DK: Did they score/take a pen - if so No.5 but also how did it feel to do so?

BS: Scoring a penalty in that kind of game and moment in the shootout is just such a relief and when u see the keepers dived the other way you know u can relax and the pressure goes back onto them. So it’s an unbelievable feeling.

DK: Did any games standout to you from this season?

BS: I’d struggle to pick out a standout game from the whole season but there’s been a lot of occasions where we’ve come back from behind and won games but I think just because of the occasion it was in I’d have to say the final because it showed real character from the lads to not drop in the moment when we went 2-0 down and come back from that to go on and win the game so that was a standout for me.

DK: What targets do you have for next season?

BS: My targets for next year stay the same really go and win the county cup with the 18s again, go on another fa youth cup run, and carry on the form we’ve been in for the reserves and see how high we can finish in the table. Because I think the lads can really kick on now and could have a really good year together next year.

Patrick Brothers | End Of Season Q&A #13 | 14.06.2024

Player-coach Patrick Brothers reflects on the 2023-24 season.

DK: How much did it mean to you to win the league, and still playing a big part in it despite injuries?

PB: Obviously it was an unbelievable feeling to win the league and to do it with the quality group of lads and staff we have here makes it even better. I have enjoyed my time being a coach of sorts and appreciate Tom and Kev letting me take on such a role but if I’m honest I would of given anything to be part of that playing squad throughout and contributing on the pitch rather than off it.

DK: What moments stand out to you from the season?

PB: Has to be the moment when that final whistle went at home to Royston. I think it took a few moments for the bench and the players on the pitch to realise what had just happened, and then it hit, step 3 title, what an achievement.

DK: Who was your player of the season?

PB: Very Generic comment this but let’s be fair, you could argue that any player out of the 14/15 could of claimed that accolade, but for me one always stands out, and that’s the skipper. The best CB at step 3 and most likely step 2, and seems to be in 3rd gear majority of the time haha.

DK: How pleased are you to be staying with the club, having had a fairly successful few seasons with us?

PB: Very happy and what’s more pleasing is that the club have kept the core of the squad together, which in my opinion is massive going into next season. Obviously success helps any changing room but keeping the right players at the club makes it much enjoyable.

DK: How much are you relishing the new season, and do you have any aims for it?

PB: Can’t wait, new level, new league and new stadiums to visit but My focus and aim right now is to try and get myself ready for the new season in regards to my fitness. I can’t get ahead of myself but naturally I want to be in squad for the first game of season. As a team I think we must go into the new league confident and aim for a top half finish.

Keiran Morphew | End Of Season Q&A #12 | 30.05.2024 |

Captain Keiran Morphew looks back at the historic double winning season, ahead to step 2 and picking up two club awards at presentation night.

DK: How do you reflect on the season overall?

KM: The best season I have had in football without a doubt. We’ve done well to have some good cup runs the last few seasons but I have always wanted a good league campaign and we delivered!

DK: Last season the aim was to have a better league campaign, so you must be pleased to have achieved it - in some style?

KM: Yea following on from the first question, it could not of gone any better!

DK: What was your favourite goal that either you or one of your teammates scored this season?

KM: I think Ings scored some belters but for me Dans winners at Berkhampstead and Halesowen really made me think we are a proper side.

DK: What other moments stood out most to you this season?

KM: Beating Leiston at home was a good night, Telford away was superb and York away. There’s others that I’m sure I’ve missed but it was the best season possible.

DK: Has it sunk in yet, doing the double?

KM: Yes I think it has sunk in, I’m preparing for next year trying to get ready to see how we will fair up against some top non league clubs.

DK: What's the overriding emotion you feel when you reflect on the season?

KM: Just so happy to have achieved something like that. You never think it’s possible really playing for a small village club.

DK: Can you pick a player of season?

KM: Very tough to do so but I thought everyone was excellent which they had to be, to be able to win the league. I voted for Kyle cause I thought he brought some steel in the midfield and always makes the right decision I felt. Coalville away was probably the best performance of the year from anyone.

DK: Another incredible FA Cup run, albeit falling just short of the first round, must top off the season?

KM: I thought we done enough to win it at home but we were lucky to nick the replay to be fair after Jake Dye heroics on the line.

DK: How does this compare to last time you got promoted with the club?

KM: This promotion is far greater than the one previous. The clubs we are up against financially to be able to compete with them and then being older personally you appreciate it more.

DK: How much does it mean to you to have done it as a small but close knit squad?

KM: We have always had a great changing room at Needham, something that Kev and Tom try to manage as well where they can. There’s different characters in there but all there to work hard for the club and have a good time doing it.

DK: Did you ever think you'd achieve what you have this season, especially as club captain?

KM: No I never imagined it, but now that we have achieved it, I think what on earth were we doing all those years down the bottom seem like a waste haha.

DK: What are your aims and targets for next season?

KM: Survival and enjoying playing whatever the result if possible.

DK: Congrats on your two awards on Friday, how much did it mean to win those?

KM: To win any award is always great and I’m happy I’ve played a part in the best season in the clubs history.

Jacob Lay | End Of Season Q&A #11 | 23.05.2024 |

Jacob Lay looks back at the season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season overall?

JL: It was great couldn’t have asked it to go any better and it’s nothing less than what we deserved with all the hard work the players and staff put in.

DK: Last season the aim was to have a better league campaign, so you must be pleased to have achieved it - in some style?

JL: Yeah, obviously last year I knew we had the potential to do good things we just needed to be more consistent and we have done this year.

DK: What was your favourite goal that either you or one of your teammates scored this season?
JL: Jamie’s hat-trick on the game to win the league was good I would say.

DK: What moments stood out most to you this season?

JL: I liked the FA Cup run that was good and unfortunate not to get through I would say.

DK: Has it sunk in yet, doing the double?

JL: Yeah I think it finally has just a great feeling and history makers!

DK: When did you think we were going to win the league?

JL: I think when we beat Leamington away that felt like one of the many big 3 points we got.

DK: How did it feel to win the title at home, in front of our fans?

JL: Amazing feeling to do it in front of your fans who have supported us all season so well and we are very grateful for them, also happy for all the players who’s have been at the club for a long time and been loyal finally getting what they have worked so hard for.

DK: Can you pick a player of season?

JL: There was honestly so many I think every player has had a spell of Being the best.

DK: What comes to mind when you think about winning the league?

JL: Just winning it with a great bunch of friends.

DK: Another incredible FA Cup run, albeit falling just short of the first round must top off the season?

JL: Yes FA Cup run was good wanted to do one better next season and get into the first round again.

DK:What are your aims and targets for next season?

JL: Just keep my head down work hard listen to the older heads and see where it takes me. This group is special though so I’m full of hope for next year who knows what we can achieve.

Luke Ingram | End Of Season Q&A #10 | 22.05.2024 |

Forward Luke Ingram recaps a memorable season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season overall?

LI: We’ve had some great seasons at Needham, but this one tops the lot, FA cup run, running York close, and winning the league, doesn’t get any better does it?

DK: Last season the aim was to have a better league campaign, so you must be pleased to have achieved it - in some style?

LI: Yeah of course, we’ve completed the cup runs and Suffolk cup, so was always important to have a league campaign with something to show for it. I’ve got a lovely golden medal now.

DK: How do you reflect on the season from a personal perspective?

LI: Probably not my greatest season numbers wise. But who cares, had good games had crap games. Wouldn’t change a thing as long as the team is successful.

DK: What was your favourite goal that you scored this season and why?

LI: Probably the one away at Telford, flew off my left foot swinger into the top corner at a lovely ground in front of a big crowd. Most euphoric feeling you can ever feel really!

DK: Do any other moments stand out to you from the season, if so what and why?

LI: Just winning the league at home and out on the town with the lads, those memories will stay with me forever. It’s been a season full of memories so it’s hard to pick just a few. Been an amazing year.

DK: Has it sunk in yet, doing the double?

LI: Yeah it’s sunk in now, we’ve had our awards evening, that’s that done and dusted. Looking forward to putting Needham on the northern map and making it 5 Suffolk cups in a row now.

DK: What's the overriding emotion you feel when you reflect on winning the league, and why?

LI: Probably pride. I’m proud to have achieved the best thing in Suffolk non league, and even prouder it’s with many of my friends. It really makes staying at the club all this time worthwhile.

DK: Who was your player of season and why?

LI: Morphs got my vote for probably the 10th season running. It’s a scandal he’s still at needham, by far the best defender the county’s seen. Others ran him close this year, but he got my vote to nobody’s surprise

DK: An incredible FA Cup run, must top off the season?

LI: Of course the FA Cup was great, was a shame they scored a lucky goal at the end because I fancied us to go even further! Another feather in the 2023/24 cap for sure.

DK: You're within half a dozen goals of taking over the record, how special would that be to achieve that next season?

LI: To be honest I always used to see club top scorer and top app holder in the programmes that used to be in the changing rooms back in the day, and always wanted to take them both, so would be incredible to take over a legend like sam Newson. Nobody will care or remember in 10 years time. But I’ll treasure it forever!

DK: It must make it more special having achieved it as a really close knit squad?

LI: For sure mate, I have so much time for all the lads here now, I genuinely look forward to the coach trips and a Five Guys after!

DK: When did you start to really believe that we were going to win the league?

LI: Soon as Mickleover lost them points when Nuneaton folded, I knew we was going to do it!

DK: How much did this season surpass your expectations?

LI: Play offs and a cup run is what I hope for but didn’t expect to happen. Wow was I wrong. This is the best season of my career and will never forget it.

DK: Having been at the club the last time we got promoted, does it feel even more special and does anything feel different to back then?

LI: It’s definitely special. Taking the club from the Ryman north to the national league. Didn’t seem possible, massive clubs are begging to get out of that league! … and it’s different, last time I was the young lad looking up to the older lads for guidance. Now I’m the older guy helping the younger lads, funny old game football and the cycle, but I’m loving it as much as I did back then

DK: How will you prepare for next season?

LI: I’m getting married, and multiple holidays. So please don’t judge me until the end of pre season! I’ll prepare the same way I always do, hopefully it works again!!

DK: What are your aims and targets for next season?

LI: Get some wins in the national league north and see where it takes us, cups we will have to see about as we will be travelling up and down the county. Hopefully they fall on home games and not away ones! … but just a solid start to the league and see where it takes us. Imagine sneaking into the play offs...

Adam Mills | End Of Season Q&A #9 | 22.05.2024 |

Winger Adam Mills reflects on the club's historic season.

DK: How do you reflect on the season, since rejoining us?

AM: It's been so good since rejoining! Obviously I knew Kev, Tom and majority of the lads but the lads I didn’t really know made it welcoming, coming into a squad that's doing so well being top of the league is always tough for anyone.

DK: Can you put into words how it feels to have won the league?

AM: At the time I couldn’t really put into words haha! It felt unreal winning the league! Was only back 3/4 months but yeah it felt good, obviously we won the league to get to step 3 and now step 2 yeah that's unreal.

DK: Similarly does this time feel more special than last time we got promoted, if so why?

AM: Errrr yeah I'd say this time is special, the first time I was 17 just a kid so didn’t really know what to do! But this time now being 27 with a lot of close mates in the team yeah that feels better!!

DK: What moments stand out to you from the season?

AM: How the boys react to a bad result! First game back think we lost? Then went on a run and picked up points when we needed too! Like when we won it! We needed to win and Mickleover needed to lose, our game went 1-1 then everyone just stepped it up another gear to make sure we done our part, ooo and the goal against Sudbury….

DK: What aims and targets do you have for next season?

AM: Just to enjoy it really with all the boys, obviously the travelling is ridiculous but it is what it is, gonna be good to be in a different league, different grounds not knowing much about teams its gonna feel good! For my self personally assists, goals, doing my bit for the team and helping to team!

DK: How much are you relishing returning to step 2 football, this time with the club?

AM: I can't wait for it!! I feel the lads are looking forward to it a lot as like I said its a completely different league and I feel we will do well, the squad is strong! The boys do their bit for everyone and stick together so I am confident in us! Look forward to see where we will be next year!

Marcus Garnham | End of Season Q&A #8 | 18.05.2024 |

Goalkeeper Marcus Garnham reflects on winning the double.

DK: You've got a bit of a habit of winning leagues, it must be nice to have done it with another club?

MG: Yeah, 100%, mate. Why not? Treat yourself. Yeah, I think it's just a coincidence, mate. I was in the right place at the right time, stumbled into the right club at the right time. It's like, oh, yeah. Oh, right. OK, then I'll see you later. I'll go and have another club, thought. Oh, Sudbury, you want me? OK. What's going on here, then? Oh, won the league again, have we? Oh, OK. All right. Needham Market. Oh, let's try not to get relegated this year. Oh, actually, why don't we go one better and just win the league? Oh, OK, no worries. We'll do that as well, shall we? It's just crazy how football works out, man. You go on a run, you get that belief, you get that mentality and all the crappy bits, like, you know, like the working hard, running after people when you lose the ball, all the bits that people don't like doing.
It just becomes so easy. Then last year, how tricky it was to even have a shot on target, let alone, like, winning games and beating teams, like, much bigger than ourselves. Just crazy, man. Just like, it's just got a snowball in it, like, just snowball effect just kept, the run just kept going and going. And then when we lost, it was like, we just always have, like, the next Tuesday night, then we knew the next team was going to get battered. Do you know what I mean? They were just going to get it the next game, on a Tuesday. It's just one of those strange seasons, isn't it? I don't think Needham destroyed many teams locally for a long time.

DK: Well, you've got two trophies, your 10th Premier Cup. Doesn't get much better!

MG: Yeah, it's nice, man. It's always nice to win things, like, I don't know, I just, yeah, I like to think of myself as a bit of a winner, demanding of people, I guess, you know. Passionate about what I do, I guess. And that's what I've always been like, just give everything I've got, 110 percent. And when that's no longer good enough, then just kind of like, stop, I guess.

DK: Very vocal leader from the back.

MG: Well, having a go at everyone, yeah, that's about right. Yeah, just hammering Dan and hammering Keiran, and then Keiran and Dan just hammering me back, and that's basically it. Or swearing about a striker when they miss a chance up top, and you hear me at the other end going, what is he doing? Yeah, that's about right. And that's what normally happens, because I can hear people laughing when I lose my head. Like, when we're down by the balcony end, when I'm like, at that end, first half, normally, and we miss a chance at the other end, I think people just look at me and they just see, like, how animated I am, like, what the heck's he doing? What are you doing? And I can hear people chuckle, and that's quite funny.

DK: It's the goalkeeper trait, isn't it? You see what other people don't see.

MG: Yeah, you're right. It looks so much easier from where I'm standing, I'll tell you that. Yeah. Like, there's some times where you just want to run out of your goal, run upfield, and just pelt the ball yourself. Volley one in, show them how it's done. Did that in training a few times, you see, that was fun.  Like, when Poddy was down the other end, we played, like, short-sided games with a full-sized goal, so we were about 35 yards apart. Yeah. And I saw he wasn't paying attention, I just dropped the ball and zinged it in the top corner, and everyone's going absolutely ballistic. And I'd done it one week, and then a week after, I did a half-volley, and stuck it in the bottom corner. From, like, 35 yards out. Just hammering him, I loved it. Just shouting at the lads, that's how it's done, boys, that's how it's done. And they're just all rolling around laughing at me.
There's nothing worse, your goalie's laughing at you after you've just absolutely shanked one, your goalie's just in the goal laughing away. And I see it in Seth, me and him just go at each other at training all the time. I'll go up to him, I'll tell him he's shocking or something, I'll go, you're so shocking, Seth. And then he'll go, you're an old big something. Then we go at each other, and then there'll be training sessions where he's on fire, and there's nothing I can do. There's other training sessions where I'll just get in his head, and he just gets worse and worse and worse, and I'm just laughing at him, or I save all his shots. I'm making saves, and as he's shooting, I'm laughing as I'm saving it. And he's like, back off Marco. He's absolutely mental, I love it. He's such a great lad. He takes it well, to be fair. Well, I always say to all the boys, if I didn't speak to you, that means I don't like you. If I take the mick out of you, I like you a lot. Do you know what I mean? That's how it works. I've always said to Nico, if I take the mick out of you and I talk to you, that means I like you, so don't take what I say to you to heart.

DK: Overall, how do you reflect on the season?

MG: From a team perspective, it couldn't have gone any better. The boys were phenomenal. You just go through the team. Tommy Smith signs for us, and it looks like he's been playing for our team for five, six years. He's been unbelievable, so consistent, and then you go through to Dan. Only setting up, I know that you can just stick it on either foot of his, and he can pick a pass 35, 40 yards away. Always makes great blocks. Keiran, he likes to think that he can just head and kick it, but he brings so much more to the team. He's decent on the ball. He tries to play centre-midfield in training, which I think is quality. I think he's unreal, but he's always like, no, I prefer centre-back. He's phenomenal, mate. He goes unnoticed, so it's really nice to see.
You see him get his awards and stuff. I was really made up for him. It's nice to see him smiling as well, and really enjoying himself, which is great.
Then you've got Jakey Dye right back. He's just Jakey Dye, up and down. He's just superb.
Then you look at Dyl. He just looks casual. He's an unbelievable player.
Just superb. Just gets on the ball, tight situations. Looks like he's going to lose it, and then rolls his studs over the ball, and then he gets past someone, and he's off.
Tev's just tenacious. One of the most annoying guys, but I love him. He's quality.
He just does all the crappy things in football. He does really, really well, but then he's got a lot of quality on top of that, that sometimes goes missed. People don't think of it, but he's got so much quality on top of that as well.
He's had a fantastic year himself. He should be really proud of himself. Then we got By(ron Lawrence) come back.
He came back from injury. It's great to see him play back on the pitch with him. So that's really great to see, and I really hope he does well in whatever he does next.
Jacob's play adjusted really well. Gets on the pitch really quick. He should be really proud of what he's achieved this year.
He's a lovely, lovely boy, and it's a pleasure to play with him. Ingers is just Ingers, man. Mr Needham, a bit like Keiran, plays down his ability, but he's just a brilliant bloke and a fantastic player.
I know people call him Pengram, but he's so much more than that. He scored some important and unbelievable goals this year, and his work rate is unbelievable, especially when he's not throwing his arms around, when he doesn't get the ball. Hammy's just superb.
He just plays where he wants, mate. I think he just knows football so well that he can just play in any position and get a seven or eight out of ten. So he's been superb.
Then you look at the strikers. I hammer Seth all the time, but he's great. He's top goalscorer this year.
Didn't realise, thanks to Stowmarket, with his 17 goals in one game. He's brilliant, and I really hope he does well and goes on to better things than playing with me for another year or so. Jamie McGrath. Since he's been doing his one-to-one coaching, with his missus in his back garden. He's been an unbelievable player, and also learnt how to play a centre field as well. And he's notched 18 as well.
Nico's a great lad. I've been speaking to him today.
He's just a fantastic lad. Just such a lovely boy with so much talent. I said to him, you'll always be welcome back at Needham, because you've got so much quality. I'd like to not see you again, in a good way, if that makes sense. So that shows that he's made the step up sort of thing. Yeah, I'd take him in a heartbeat if we ever got a sniff of getting him back at any point next season.
But he's got a lot of talent, great attitude. He will go far, whether it's at Ipswich or not, is to be said. But I think if he carries on with the way he's going, he's not going to be short of a few offers of clubs.
So I'm trying to go through the team and pick out players, and when they reflect back, they should realise what a fantastic group of players they are, and that they're so much better than they actually think they are. Throughout the whole season, no-one's got big time. Everyone's been in it together, and they should all be so proud of themselves, because I don't see many teams doing what we've done in our area, in our county, for a long time, I don't think. If you look at where we are budget-wise in our league, and where we've ended up, we've overachieved massively. I mean, talent-wise, we've got a lot of talent, but if you look financially, we're punching well above our weight in relation to that.
Personally, if I reflect on the season, I've had a quieter year. I like to think that I've made saves when I needed to. I've helped out when I can.
Made important saves when I've had to make important saves. Yeah, a couple of things. In games, sometimes you look back and go, I should have done better with this, and done better with that.
But if you can keep the amount of mistakes you make in a season on the ball, or making saves on one hand, it ain't worse.

DK: What would your save of the year be, Marcus?

MG: Made a few important saves. I think one of the most important saves I made this year, probably Leamington away. Maybe the pen, then getting up and blocking the second shot. That was not a great save, but it was just an important save at the time, because we needed the win, didn't we? They were on us that game. They were on us. On the day, they were better than us, let's face it. We managed to grind out a win, didn't we? So yeah, it was important. Come towards the end of the season, it was like a playoff championship rival. Going there and getting the point, and helping the team get over the line. The way we did was exceptional, I think. I've made other saves that have probably looked better, and I can't really remember.

DK: What's the favourite goal scored this year by a Needham player?

MG: My favourite one. So you've got Hammy's one that won the award. Yeah. But I loved Luke Ingram's left-footed one against Telford. I also liked Luke Ingram's one when he was too lazy to run down the wing with the ball, so decided to just smash it in the goal from about 60 yards out. From near the halfway line, because he didn't want to run anymore. Then you've got Tev's free kick. I think it was against Leamington, where they've shifted it and he's hit it the same side as the goalkeeper, proper side netting. Or even his lefty against St Ives, which went in the top corner. But I think for me, when we beat Telford 2-0 away from home, and Ingram's just dug that one out on his weak foot on the angle and smashed it in the top corner, I thought, blimey, this season's going to get a bit silly, I think. If we're doing this to teams away from home, this is ridiculous.

DK: Did you have a good angle of that one? Because Tev and Tommy picked that one out and they both said that they had a good angle of that one.

MG: Oh, it's just that he's just stepped onto it and he's just not even thought about it. He's just gone wham and it's just gone flying in the top corner. I was like, oh my God. And I don't know what the score was at the time, but I was like, oh my gosh, we're going to win this game and these fans are not going to be happy in the second half when I go down their end. But the rocket started us off on the game.

DK: What other moments stand out to you from the season?

MG: Um, York City away was quite special. I made a couple of saves first half, I think, early doors. Then we just matched them for the whole game, you know. That was quite good to play against them.

DK: And there was Jake's superb goal line clearance.

MG: Yeah, and then falling down like he'd been shot, as well. That was quite funny. It was like something out of Saving Private Ryan or something, you know.
Like, slow motion. It's so dramatic. Other great moments. I mean, there's been so many this year. There's been a few games where I've been busy. I mean, there's not been many. But no, it's just been a lovely experience this year, really. I can't really pick out lots of individual things we've done, but as a team, it's just been an absolute pleasure to play with the team that we had this year. Yeah, it's brilliant.

DK: Not long ago, I saw on Instagram, I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a Derby player went out in his training kit with his medal on. That reminded me a bit of the videos I saw of you doing that when we got our league trophy.

MG: Yeah, because some of Tom Rothery's mates from work came with us to Ipswich. I dropped them off at the taxi rank and I carried on walking up.
And I bumped into my mate Jack Newman and I just started cheering and dancing with him. It was funny because I was going up to another bar to go see Tev. Love it.

DK: What emotions do you feel when you reflect back on winning the league?

MG: Just feel like the older you get, it's different. When you're young and you win things, it's lovely. But the moments go really fast and before you realise it, it's like midweek and you're like, oh, OK, well, it's done now. But with this one particularly, yeah, I just tried to take it in as much as I could. When everyone was dancing with Kevin, the first thing I did is I went over to my mum and I went over to my dad and just spoke with them really to just savour the moment and just watch. Rather than be in it, I just wanted to watch the boys enjoy themselves. And I just felt really proud.

DK: Has it sunk in yet that we've won it? Not really, to be fair.

MG: I don't know. I know we're there. I've seen the list of teams for the league, but I'm like, until we play our first game and we're using the different balls, we've got all the different things in the ground, the Vanarama stuff goes up, all that sort of stuff.
And we've got the Vanarama stuff on our kit, and our training gear, and all that sort of stuff. I don't think it will properly sink in until then, do you know what I mean? Yeah. Obviously, you know you've won the league. You've got the cup, you've got the medal. I've been wearing it ever since. So until I feel like it's not really going to properly sink in until we're literally, we start up again in a few weeks.

DK: Are you wearing your medal right now then, Marcus?

MG: 100%. I just wear it around the house now to do the cleaning. So I did a bit of mopping. So I wore that. And then I went to Aldi, actually, and I wore it to Aldi, which was quite nice. I bought myself some fish fingers for my fish finger sandwich I want to make later when I'm watching the boxing.
People just looked at me, smiled and laughed and carried on walking.

DK: Who is your player of the season?

MG: I believe Keiran was my player of the season. And I texted him after the last game of the season as well. I just said, this is... I do text a lot of the teams midweek, just checking on them, seeing how they are. That's kind of like my thing that I do, really, and telling people well done and all that sort of stuff. But for me, Keiran has been phenomenal, really. He needs to score more headers from set pieces.
Because every time I say to him, you've got to score from a set piece today, he goes, no chance. He just shakes his head. But yeah, he's just phenomenal, isn't he? I think when you play at a certain level for so long, you're that good for so long, people just take you for granted. And people just think, oh, that's that person. They play at that level all the time. But I think it was really nice to see, last night especially, him getting the appreciation that he fully deserves for all of his efforts for all these years. So, he was my player of the year. Yeah, it's good to see people getting recognition and that, like, not just the players, but other people as well. Like with Ken and that, and yourself, and yeah, it was really good.

DK: Yeah, you spoke about in the FA Cup run against York when we matched them up for literally all of that 180 minutes, other than that deflection goal that they got. It's another incredible FA Cup run to accompany the two trophies.

MG: Yeah, I agree. I think we haven't got a much dissimilar side than what we've had the past two years, maybe? Three years? Yeah. We've only got three or four extra lads. And we've matched a lot of Conference teams, what, maybe five or six in the past few years? We've matched them up, to be fair. We've done well against them. Obviously, you have to ride your luck, don't you, in any game or any Cup game? But, yeah, I think we can take a lot of heart in the fact that we've put in good performances. It's just like, instead of producing a performance as a one-off, we're going to have to produce performances like that week in, week out to be able to survive at this level.

DK: And speaking of next year, what are your aims for it?

MG: Hopefully win the league with Lowestoft when I sign with them next week. And then go from there, really. Nah, I wouldn't have been invited to the dinner if I was off, mate. Tom would have made sure I was not sitting on his table. I'll tell you that right now.

DK: Similarly, how will you approach next season?

MG: Just do what I do. That's what I've always done and I'm not going to change it. Just do what I do and just go for it. Give it everything I've got and then that's it, really. That's what you can do.

DK: Which, in your words, is dive around, save a few shots, annoy Keiran and Dan, have banter with the away support, get abused for 90 minutes and laugh it off.

MG: Pretty much, yeah. It's just a standard Saturday afternoon in the life of me, really.
We've got some funny old characters. Jacob Lay, we went abroad, I sat with him and Tommy Smith. We sat together and we just laughed the whole time over the most stupid, trivial things.
We just had such great times. Brilliant. We were saying how much better Jamie is now. Now she's doing some one-to-one coaching in the garden with him. He's a much better player. I personally think she should have got an award last night for being coach of the season.

DK: Can't be much better as a goalkeeper than to keep clean sheets?!

MG: Yeah, it's not bad. Not bad feeling. I don't count them. Someone mentioned that I've kept quite a few. Then I started counting them. I thought, that's quite a lot.
