REACTION | Tom Rothery Post Match Interview | St Ives Town v Needham Market | 27.01.2024 |

Assistant Manager Tom Rothery reflects on yesterday's game.

DK: What did you make of the game overall?

TR: I thought it was a fairly even game, I thought we played reasonably well unlucky to not get a point I felt but unlike us I think the goals we’ve given away today are poor from our perspective. But we showed some good characteristics coming back where we’ve scored in injury time albeit it’s been ruled out and generally competing well against a team that are clearly flying atm.

DK: It must've been disappointing to lose after quickly finding an equaliser on two occasions?

TR: It’s never nice losing, the third goal is a mis hit and then the chalked off goal kicks you further but we’ve had times where things have gone for us, today they didn’t so we just have to move on.

DK: Did you feel the break without a game impacted us today?

TR: Playing regular helps with rhythm but then you can also pick up injuries so can work either way I guess but as I said I didn’t think it was a bad performance overall.

DK: Are there any positives for you from today?

TR: No not really we lost so I don’t ever see that as a positive.

DK: It must've been a plus to have Milzy start on his return to the club, but a shame that Luke couldn't play?

TR: Unfortunately Luke has a slight groin strain that he picked up at Halesowen and he’s always important so he is a miss but we have a squad so we have to deal with that. Millsy has been good since he signed, like I said at the time we know what we are getting. We worked on what he brings but I think as it showed today at times there’s still a bit more work to do for some players understanding from that.

DK: Do you see today as a minor blip?
TR: As you’re aware we haven’t lost many games this season so it’s important to keep clarity. We’ve played a good side today that’s flying, they’ve scored 14 unanswered goals at home in the last 3 then backed that up with a 0-5 at Mickleover but we’ve come here today and I feel are unlucky to not get something from the game. So it happens and now’s it’s about how we react and for us to do that in the best way we need to be honest with ourselves. I’m happy to have a pop in the changing room when it’s needed but today wasn’t a bad performance. Yes there’s some things we could do better but we’ve have one cleared off the line one disallowed and generally played pretty well but we should and could have definitely done better for their goals I feel but there’s no need for an overreaction it’s frustrating, disappointing as losing games always is but we know where we are.

DK: It must've been nice that we took our goals well?

TR: We played some good stuff at times and both goals were nice. On the day we weren’t as clinical as we have been as I think we had a few other good moves where we didn’t quite show that same quality.

DK: Big game up next at home to Telford, how do you see that going?

TR: It’ll be tough there 17 unbeaten I think and have real quality in their squad.

Adam Mills | NMFC New Signing Interview | 18.01.2024 |

The returning Adam Mills talks about coming back to the club.

DK: Welcome back to the club, first of all can you tell us how rejoining us came about?

AM: Good to be back! Got told that the club had put in a 7 day for me after the game Saturday, after speaking with Kev and Tom I then decided that it would be good for me to come back and help the club push for promotion and get what the club deserves!

DK: How much would it mean to you to play a part in our push for promotion, having originally came through the academy here?

AM: Would mean a lot to me, obviously being here for a long time from the academy then into the first team getting promotion to step 3 with them, of course it would be unreal to get another one with the club.

DK: Having been here previously it must make it easier to slot back into the squad, especially as you know the majority of the lads already?

AM: Yeah thats always good thing I suppose knowing the lads very well and obviously Kev and Tom! The lads have had an unbelievable season and doing very very well, always kept an eye each week on how the boys have been getting on, I think its what the club deserves for sure!

DK: How does it feel to be back at the club?

AM: It feels great to be back and cant wait to get back out there and do my bit to help the club!

REACTION | Kevin Horlock + Dan Morphew Post Match Interviews | Halesowen Town v Needham Market | 13.01.2024 |

Manager Kevin Horlock reflects on our win at Halesowen.

DK: Well, we're going to get anywhere this season. Wins like that are going to help us.

KH: Yes, it was a massive, massive result for us, but a massive performance against, and I will say I thought before this game that Halesowen were probably the best team we've played so far this season, and they showed that again today.  I thought we were brilliant defensively, we put our bodies on the line, and like I said, if they're the best team we've played against over two games, they've not scored against us. So, I don't know, the win probably flatters us a little bit, but that's what good teams do. We defended for our lives, we give a chance to win games, and I always felt we had a chance in us, and it came late on, which was perfect for us. So, yes, it was a perfect away performance, I think.

DK: Just one of those where luck was on our side in the key moment?

KH: Yes, I'm not sure it was luck. I think it was a good delivery. The goal in itself was a good delivery in. Tom, obviously, is astute with what he does. He gives lads information and said, if you clear the near post area, you'll get a chance, and we cleared it, and Ingers got a cross, and it was a good save from the keeper, and Dan was there to just nod it home. So, that wasn't lucky, and I don't think the win was lucky. I think we've had to work really hard for it. I think we've had to put a hell of a shift in away from home, and you make your own luck in the end because we gave our chance to win the game, and that's what we did. Looking at the game, I think if you'd have offered me a draw at the end, at the start, I'd have took it.

DK: As it goes later on in the game, you're thinking, could we nick it? And then we did. So, it's a sign of a good team.

KH: That's the difference this season. I think we've shown that we can grind out results and beat the best of them.

DK: And it's nice to get the first away winner of the new year out of the way early.

KH: Yes, we've been brilliant away from home. We've won a lot of games, so hopefully that continues. This is big. I can't imagine many teams coming here and winning. I think they're going to take points off the team. So, it's a little bit of a marker down for us, and probably proves to everyone that we could be serious contenders.

DK: And it's nice to see Nico get his first start.

KH: Yes, I thought he'd come on and affected the game really well last time out. He scored a good goal.
He looked a threat. He's got good energy and obviously got massive potential. So, hopefully the loan works for both of us.

DK: And Manny came on and made his debut.

KH: Yes, we sort of tried to just thicken the midfield up a little bit. Obviously, they were moving the ball and had quite a bit of possession late on in the game when we were trying to hold on. So, he went on there and got his first start. And again, he's someone that's got massive potential. He's got massive attributes to his game, and hopefully, again, the loan can work for both parties. And obviously, their challenge is to try and get in the team and stay in there, which is difficult when you're coming to a team at the top of the table.

DK: It must be very pleasing that the only real clear shot we had on goal ended up being the winner.

KH: Yes, we sort of huffed and puffed. I think we had a couple of decent chances first. I thought we had the best chances. In fact, I think Tev had one. And Nico, one fell to Nico, where he just didn't connect as well as he would have wanted to. But other than that, yes, we didn't have too much. But you only need one chance. And like I said, it was a great set piece and something we'd spoke about, which makes it even more pleasing.

DK: Did you have confidence that a winner was going to come? Or were you happy with the draw?

KH: I don't know. I think when it gets late, I'd have been happy with a draw. Clean sheet. That's the foundation of winning football matches. But obviously, you hope for a winner. And it comes. So it'd be an easier journey home than it would have been after a draw or a defeat.

DK: Obviously, we've been here before, but you weren't at the club then. So it must be nice to tick off another new ground.

KH: Yeah, another new ground. I've never lost here. I've never lost here. So the pressure's on if we have to come back because we've got a 100% record here at the minute. But it's a big football club, isn't it? You can tell by the crowd. And obviously, we've got good players as well. So that adds to what a performance the lads have put in today. And to take three points back to Needham is massive for us. Look, at the end of the day, they are a good team. But if you've got to remember, we are as well. We're not joint-chopped for no reason. We're winning games of football. We've only lost a handful of games. So as much as it is a really good result for us and performance, they play the team at the top of the table or joint-top of the table. So it was never going to be easy for them. And with us keeping them out and not aiding them to score always left them open to losing because we do have a threat going forward, whether it be from a set-piece or in open play. We've scored goals in one game of football and this is another one to add to that.

DK: Back at Bloomfields next week.

KH: Yeah. Look, obviously, our away record has been unbelievable. So normally it's one of them. Yeah, we want to get back to Bloomfields to try and get points. But we seem to be getting them home anyway. So it's always nice to play at home. Obviously, it means there's no travelling. Obviously, more home support.
But that doesn't mean it's a win. So we have to work just as hard, prepare properly like we will. And we'll be aiming for another three points.

Goalscorer Dan Morphew reflects on the win.

DK: A nice rare goal for you, it must be good.

DM: Yeah, it's been coming a little bit the last couple of weeks, you know, hit the crossbar last week. And yeah, thankfully this week I managed to stretch and get my nose on it and yeah, nudge it in the back of the net. So I've been feeling quite confident attacking corners recently. And Tev's been putting some good balls in, Dylan's been putting some good corners in. So it's about time we scored from 1 really.

DK: Poacher's goal.

DM: Yeah, yeah. Luckily, a great header from Luke in the first place. It's a good save from the keeper and he just patted it straight onto my head. So yeah, just about went in the net and it crept in. Well, I meant to head it in, but the keeper just popped up for me. So it couldn't have been any better really, couldn't have been any better.

DK: What did you think of the game?

DM: I thought it was a tough game, a tough pitch, you know, it was sort of a real battle. They were a good side, I think, I think it's fair to say, and yeah, we sort of dug in deep, defended well. We had a few good chances in the first half and the second half, we didn't really create much. It sort of became a bit of a stalemate in the second half. And then we had a few corners later on and thankfully one of them went in the back of the net.

DK: It's nice to get our first away win done for the new year.

DM: Yeah, yeah. Well, obviously we had Sudbury on new years didn't we? So yeah, it's nice to make up for that in terms of away performances. I think, you know, it's a bit of a classic away performance. Stay tight, don't give anything away and then take your chances when they come. So yeah, it's a good away performance for us.

DK: All the hallmarks of a side that could get promotion.

DM: Yeah, one game at a time, but when you win away games like that one, you sort of start to believe it might be written in the stars at times, don't you? But I don't think too many of the boys are worried about that, to be honest. It's just a nice feeling to be winning games and have that confidence going into every game, thinking you're going to win. So it's a nice thing to have and yeah, long may it continue.

DK: After the disappointment of Tuesday being off, it would be nice to be back at home on Saturday.

DM; Yeah, it was a shame. We're good Tuesday nights under the lights, aren't we? So we're a great Tuesday night side. So it would have been nice to have that game on. But unfortunately, the ref deemed it unplayable. But it would be nice to be back at home in front of our fans on Saturday as well. And hopefully, you know, keep the good home form going. We've been playing really well at home, I think. So hopefully keep that going. And we need to make up for the away performance at Stratford. Obviously, the first game of the season, we had a bit of a mare there away from home, didn't we? So we need to set the record straight. We've got plenty to play for and plenty to put right at Stratford at home.

Nico Valentine | Get To Know Q+A #13 | 06.01.2024 |

On-loan Ipswich Town winger is next up in the 'Get To Know Q+A hotseat.

Quickfire questions

Favourite hot drink: Favourite hot drink... It's got to be a hot chocolate. Can't go wrong.

Favourite cold drink: A nice, a cold Coca-Cola.

Favourite snack: Ooh. I love white chocolate. Love white chocolate.

Favourite takeaway or dinner: That's got to be, I'd have to say takeaway, Chinese and favourite dinner has to be steak, fries, onion rings.

Favourite TV show: That's a tough one, that is. I really enjoy watching like prison documentaries, like insights behind that. Like obviously there's nothing I want to get involved in, but I think to see in behind what actually happens, I think it's really interesting.

If you were to be in a TV show or film, which one would it be and why?
NV: That's a tough one. I'd probably say, when you watch Creed, it gives you the motivation to go and do what you want. So I think obviously the characters in Creed, Adonis or whatever his name is, I think that's a really good show. That gives you motivation.

Favourite hobby other than football?
NV: This is a tough one. I don't get much time to do anything but football, to be fair. But I'm trying to think. I'm trying to get into golf, but I haven't played too much of it. I'm not very good, but I think that's something I want to try and get better at.

What team do you support?
NV: Ipswich Town. Well, Chelsea and Ipswich, but obviously I've played at Ipswich my whole life, so I've supported them my whole life, but Premier League team, Chelsea.

Favourite professional player, current or all time? NV: Current, I'd probably go Raheem Sterling. It's the kind of legacy that he's left. Maybe not so much now, but what he's done before for England and all time Eden Hazard.

Favourite song or musician?
NV: Drake's probably the simple one here. I reckon that's been said a lot. But to be fair, any sort of American rap or whatever, I can listen to.

Favourite moment playing football so far?
NV: Probably have to be getting my first call up for an England training camp or the two FA Youth Cup runs I was involved in at Ipswich. They were good experiences and that's helped me realise what I need to do next in my career, I think.

Yeah, you got to the semis and quarters in those, didn't you?
NV: Yeah, they were two unbelievable runs. Obviously, the semi-final one, I was a bit younger. I came into the squad as an under-16 and had to grow up quite quickly in those games because I was chucked in at the deep end. But then the quarter-final one, I was more of an experienced player within that team. So I'd obviously experienced it before and I had to help boys through it. But both were different experiences, but they're the ones that you live for, kind of thing, and that's why I want to keep playing football for moments like that.

Yeah, beating some teams that are at the top level of, obviously, under-18 football, it must have been amazing?
NV: Yeah, definitely. I think we've always had the belief that we can do it. And especially my age group, we've been together a very long time and we'd always beaten the Cat 1 clubs, the top clubs in England, but to do it on that sort of stage where there's a spotlight put on it, I think we just showed what we could do and what we were capable of. And I think more people were surprised externally, but internally, we knew that we had that sort of ability. So it was just one game at a time. We knew we could come out on top.

Do you own any sporting memorabilia, like signed shirts, stuff like that
NV: No, I don't. I've got a few of the old Chelsea shirts and a couple of Champions League final where Chelsea played United. I've got a couple of badges and flags from that, which my cousin gave me. So other than that, no. My cousin's stepdad went to the game and he got given both of them. I think it was in Moscow.

What's the one thing you think you're known for best as a player and why?
NV: Probably my ability in isolation. So in 1v1 situations out wide. And I love to be 1v1 because I think it shows my strengths and I'm able to get spectators on the edge of their seat, which I like to do. I think I said it in my first interview, but that's really what I live for and I want to affect games.

What inspired you to be a footballer?
NV: To be fair, I was kind of pushed into it. And it was one of them where four or five, like I'd just go to the sports hall and we'd do mini games and you don't really think much about it. But I was kind of seen to have a talent there. And they kind of pushed me and shaped me into what I was at six or seven. And then obviously Ipswich, I got into Ipswich quite young, and from there, I've never really looked back. Like you can't really reflect on it because it's all quite full on, but you enjoy it at the same time. And you're constantly developing and constantly changing, and I think that's the enjoyable thing. And I just want to know where I can go and the potential that I can reach.

Who's the best player you've played with?
NV: This is a tough one. Very tough one. Obviously, there's a few that I've played with in the first team at Ipswich, in friendlies and stuff like that. But in terms of my age, I'd probably have to say I played in a training game with Jobe Bellingham. So he's obviously playing at the top of the game now in the Championship. And I think he's probably the most well-known one. Well, obviously Sam Morsy played in my game in pre-season. He was there. You've got Nathan Broadhead at the top of the game, playing Internationally for Wales.

REACTION | Kevin Horlock, Jamie McGrath + Nico Valentine Post Match Interviews | Needham Market 4-0 Kettering Town | 06.01.2024

Manager Kevin Horlock and goalscorers Jamie McGrath and Nico Valentine give their thoughts on yesterday's win over Kettering Town.

Kevin Horlock reflects on our 4-0 victory.

DK: A much better day and a well-deserved result?

KH: Yeah, I think in the end, I don't think anyone can argue with the result. Four goals, clean sheet and let's be honest, it could have been more. I thought we had quite a tentative start to the game.

It was a little bit lacklustre at times, lacked a little bit of energy but obviously we addressed that at half-time and second half I thought was excellent.

DK: With the goal coming on 44 minutes, it's a perfect time to score.

KH: Yes, it was to be fair. Not much happened in the first half. We huffed and puffed, got in good areas but didn't really dominate as much as I'd have liked. We didn't create too many chances so the goal coming just before half-time, it was a really nice timing, and gave us something to build on the second half, we addressed to be a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more front foot, a little bit more energy which we did and in the end we created a number of chances.

DK: The goals were absolutely insane as well.

KH: Yeah, obviously Jamie I thought was excellent today. He played a little bit of a different role in midfield but he looks a threat from there. He holds the ball and obviously scored two great goals. Ingers' was a great finish and a great move and then obviously Nico's come on and got his first goal for the club so it was a pleasing day all round.

DK: And Tommy Smith, the anchor in both ends of it.

KH: Yeah, Tommy's been magnificent since he's come to us. He's given us a real outlet on the left. He's defensively part of the defence that's been so good this year so he's been an excellent signing for us.

DK: And like you say, Nico's second ever senior goal I think?

KH: He's got more to come. The lad's got ability, you can see that. Obviously, he signed and then was injured for a bit so he's not got many minutes and he's had to come off the bench because we've been in such good form. But like I said to the lads, we've brought Emmanuel in as well now from Ipswich.

We've got a healthy squad. Whoever I pick to start, I've got a healthy bench and a good bench to come on. So, it's about lads playing to their potential, playing at a high level to keep a shirt and that creates competition and hopefully that creates success.

DK: After Monday, those two changes added a bit more freshness?

KH: Yeah, I think we've done that. I think we've lost three games all season and as disappointing as it was, the result against Sudbury, I wasn't too bothered because we are going to lose games in football, and generally, we bounced back. I think the first time we lost, we went on a massive run of winning. The second game against Nuneaton, we lost, I think, we went on an eight-game winning run and hopefully this one's the same. Sometimes in football, you need that little kick up the backside to restart and rebuild momentum. So, that was important. I think if we'd have lost against Sudbury and then obviously dropped points again today or not performed very well today, then you start getting a little bit worried. But I knew we'd turn up and get a performance and a result today.

DK: And back top of the league.

KH: Yeah, to be shot at. It's hard not to look at it, obviously. And it's nice. We want to be up there, but we don't want to be up there in January. We want to be up there at the end of the season. So, we'll keep working hard. We'll keep looking over our shoulders. We'll keep getting shot at and be everyone's cup final and team to beat. And we'll see how we deal with it.

I think we've got a squad and a mentality within that squad that can hopefully cope with it. And obviously, we'll see that further down the line.

DK: What's the most pleasing thing today?

KH: The three points were massive. I think the second-half performance, the goals were good as well on a fairly heavy pitch. A clean sheet, four goals. I think that's what says it all.

DK: You mentioned about bringing Emmanuel in, what do you make of him so far?

KH: Look, he was done first thing this morning, so he's not been to training yet. Obviously, we've watched him. I've spoke to people about him. He's a big lad, 6'2", a centre midfielder that can play, technically really, really good. So, it just bolsters us up and gives us options. So, his job, along with all the other lads that haven't started today, is to get in the team. And if you get in the team and do well, you stay in there. So, obviously, I'm hoping it can be a good move for both Manny, Nico and ourselves because we want to try and give them minutes. We want to win games and hopefully that can develop them at the same time.

DK: Any reason why Reece wasn't in the squad?

KH: Reece was injured. He's had an ongoing problem with his pelvis for a number of weeks now. Obviously, he's dipping in and out. So, that was one reason why I tried to get Manny in, really, to give him that time to get his injury fixed once and for all.

So, hopefully, obviously, now adding to the squad, we've not got to rush him back and ask him to be involved again until his injury is sorted once and for all.

DK: And moving on, Tuesday, Redditch. Another tough game.

KH: Yeah, a massive one. I think they ended up losing today but they're hot on our heels and obviously a good club and always there or thereabouts. So, it'll be a big one. I'm hoping we obviously perform well and if we do that, we've got a chance. There's no doubt about that. But, yeah, I think there's still a long way to go in the season but this is certainly one that you could build up to be a six-pointer.

DK: So far, so good to start the year off.

KH: Yeah, now we've got Sudbury out of the way.
We've pressed the restart button. That's out of our systems now and hopefully we can go on a winning run. That was 20-23-ish.

Double goalscorer Jamie McGrath reflects on yesterday's win over Kettering.

DK: It must be nice to start the year off with two nice goals.

JMcG: Yes, it's nice. To be fair, I think it's more important that we bounce back from the defeat on Monday. So, yes, the goals are great, but three points was the most important thing today.

DK: Yes, what did you make of the game?

JMcG: I thought we started quite slowly, actually, but then we sort of grew into the game and, you know, great goal by Ingers before half-time and then, yes, just sort of kicked on from there second half. But, yes, as I said, I think we grew into the game and then the second half was much better, more like it.

DK: Your second goal must please you more because it was a good solo run and a heck of a finish.

JMcG: Yes, it was nice. To be fair, I was just as pleased with the first one. They all count the same. So just to get on the score sheet and help the team is the most important thing.

DK: Did you know much of the first one?

JMcG: Well, it was just sort of about getting in the right area. I know that Tommy Smith's got a great left foot. So once he gets it down the wing, it's just a case of us forward players getting in and around the six-yard box. And then, thankfully, I was there to just sort of tap it in.

DK: What's the best thing about today for you, other than three points?

JMcG: I think it was just, you know, scoring four goals, keeping a clean sheet. It's about as good as an afternoon as you can hope for.

DK: Keeping the momentum going and dispelling Monday?

JMcG: Yes, I think that was important. We were nowhere near good enough on Monday. It was way below our standards that we set this season. So it was important that we came here today and put that right, which thankfully we have done.

DK: And with this your first start in a few games, it must be nice to have hit the ground running, so to speak.

JMcG: Yes, of course. It's always disappointing when you're on the bench. But we've got such a strong squad that you can't really be too downhearted and disappointed, and you just have to take your chances when you come on or when you get the chance to start, like I did today. So thankfully, I was able to do that.

DK: A long way to go, but back top of the table.

JMcG: Yes, I know it sounds like a cliché, but we're not really focusing on that. We're just sort of taking each game as it comes and then, you know, whatever will be, will be.

DK: But it's nice to see that, isn't it?

JMcG: It is nice, yes, absolutely. Yes, you'd rather be up there than down the bottom. So, no, it is really pleasing.

DK: After how last season went, for the most part, does it make it the more sweeter how it's going so far?

JMcG: Yes, 100 percent. I think that was the chat from all of us at the start of the season, was that we needed to have a better league campaign. And thankfully, so far, we've been able to do that. So, yes, that is really pleasing.

DK: How would you describe it so far?

JMcG: Excellent. Yes, it's been brilliant. Yes, not much more to say than that, really. But it's all about maintaining standards and going again for the second half of the season.

DK: Big game on Tuesday, Redditch, who are up there as well.

JMcG: Yes, massive game. They've been doing well recently. So, but, you know, back at Bloomfields, under the lights on a Tuesday night, we back ourselves against anyone. So, we'll come here full of confidence and try and make it a very tricky game for them.

DK: And we've got Nico and Manny in the squad now to add to that squad depth.

JMcG: Yes, exactly. As you saw today, Nico came on, scored a great goal. So, he looks a really promising player. So, yes, it's just, as you say, it's a case of furthering that squad depth, and hopefully they can contribute to an already good season.

DK: Without getting too carried away, do you have faith that we can do it?

JMcG: As I said earlier, I really don't think we're sort of looking that far ahead. It's just, it really is just about taking it game by game and week by week. And then, as I say, whatever will happen, will happen.

Nico Valentine gives his thoughts on yesterday's win.

DK: It must have been nice to get your first goal for the club?

NV: Yes, it's obviously been a long time coming, and I think it's one that I've worked towards. Obviously, I came in, unfortunately, did my ankle in my first session here, but I've just been trying to build up my fitness and get back to the place I was before in the form that I was in at Ipswich just before I came here. And I think when I saw it, seeing it hit the back of the net, it's one of them that I've realised I've worked towards, and it's shown that all the work has come to show, and I'm happy with that now.

DK: After being denied by the keeper mere seconds before, that must have been even sweeter?

NV: Yes, that one was still in the back of my head. It's one of them, you try to shake it, but I've had a few here already. I think the one against Coalville, where I could have put it away. They do linger with you, but as soon as I've hit that one and it's hit the back of the net, it's immediately just felt like a relief, and the pressure's kind of gone. Because obviously, you come into teams like this on loan, and you've got to prove yourself again. Whatever you've done at academy level is forgotten. You've got to show you can do it in the men's game, and I'm happy that I've been able to have the opportunity to show what I can do.

DK: With that save, did you put more venom onto that strike?

NV: I think there was a bit of frustration behind it, because obviously it got blocked, and to be fair, I thought the deflection was going to take it in, but I think as soon as I've got it, I've heard the calls from other players, but there was only really one thing in my mind. I've seen the keeper in one-on-one, and I've just thought, if I get a clean strike off here, it's going to be very hard for him to save it, and fortunately, it went in.

DK: Wrapped off a perfect day for us as well.

NV: Yeah, the boys have been unbelievable. I've seen it first-hand. Obviously, I've come in, sat on the bench for a few games, but I think I'm learning a lot even sitting on the bench here. And they've been unbelievable with bringing me in, and you can see the performances and the direction that the club's going in, and I think the only way is up from here. I think they've set the standard so high now that even when they drop below it, they know it and they can push it back up. I think first half, we weren't as good today, but you can see that there's ability within the team to just bring the level back up and maintain a good standard.

DK: Is that the difference between Academy football and men's football?

NV: Yeah, it's a lot more of a team environment. Obviously, it's more results-driven in the men's game.
I think in Academy football, you've obviously got, you're focusing more on individual performances because you're not going to make it through as a team sort of thing. But it's a good experience to come out here on loan because you're learning what it's actually like to be in a team. Like, you might not play every week, but you've got to be happy for the team and you need to give everything for the team kind of thing. You don't want to be the one holding them back and then everyone's pushing in the same direction. And I think it's shown today. I've come into the team off the bench and I've scored and all the boys are happy for me. So I think that just shows the sort of chemistry that the team's got.

DK: So, obviously, initially your loan was for one month and then it was, it was quickly extended. Did you know much about that?

NV: So, obviously, it was a month to begin with, I did my ankle and I didn't play too much or as much as I wanted because I was still trying to pick up fitness. But I heard about the renewal of the month and I've chosen to renew it because I think there's still a lot more for me to learn here. And this is the right environment for me at this moment in time, and I'm happy to be here. And hopefully I can put on more shows like today and hopefully help the team with more goals, more assists and push towards the promotion that everyone wants.

DK: At the minute, would you like to stay here until the end of the season or is that not on your mind yet?

NV: I think we're taking it one game at a time, really, like one month at a time. It's not to say that I might not be here until the end of the season, but obviously a player of my age, a lot can change in development. A lot of things can come up, but I'm more than happy here right now. And I'm enjoying my football. I'm enjoying the group. And obviously I need to push on to try and get a start and become a staple in this team. And that's only going to come from me. It's not going to come from anyone else. So I've got to put my best foot forward and make sure that I'm giving everything every time I'm here.

Jake Dye | Get To Know Q&A #12 | 25.11.2023 |

Jake Dye is next in the Q&A hotseat.

Quickfire Questions:-

Favourite Hot Drink: Has to be coffee.

Favourite Cold Drink: Fanta Orange.

Favourite Snack: Don't mind some Doritos, to be fair.

Favourite Takeaway or Dinner: If we go takeaway, I'd probably say Chinese. If we're going dinner, it has to be a Sunday roast..

Favourite TV Show: I'll go sit on a fence here, The Inbetweeners.

If you were in a TV Show, which one would it be?

JD: That's a good question. What would it be? I reckon one which no one really watches, because I reckon I don't have much about me. A bit boring. Something stuck on ITV Five or something.

DK: What's your favourite hobby other than football? JD: See, I used to play a bit of cricket back in the day. I didn't really enjoy it, but I was half handy at it, so probably stick that down.

DK: Batter bowler?

JD: Batter batsman. Yeah.

DK: Top order?

JD: Top order. Sundays, I opened a bat and did really enjoy it, score a little bit of runs, but I'd probably go in three or four.

DK: Do you play many video games?

JD: No, not at all. Maybe a little bit of football manager, but nothing recently.

DK: What team do you support?

JD: Liverpool.

DK: Your favourite pro player, current or all time?

JD: So I'll probably go. Two Liverpool lads go. Trent and Steven Gerrard.

DK: Favourite song or musician, if you have one?

JD: I reckon everyone says Drake, so I'm going to steer clear there.

DK: No one's actually said that, from my knowledge. No.

JD: I'll stick it down then. Drake I'll take that one.

DK: I've done about ten. I've got a few to post because we've had games called off.

JD: I'll tell you what, I'll take Drake if no one's taken it. If someone has taken it,  if you look back, I'll go Fred again.

DK: Sorry. Favourite moment in a Needham shirt so far and why?

JD: I think York's been was pretty special. York away, great team performance. Obviously the heroics right at the end. Little header off the line. So that or Yeovil was definitely up there. What a win that was.

DK: Yeah, I think that's something I've been wanting to talk to you about. How did you manage to get that off the line?

JD: I don't know, mate. I think I'm still concussed from it, if I'm honest. It was just one of those where just instinctively just dropped back in and thankfully volleyed it straight towards my head and I'd take maybe two steps to my right and, yeah, thankfully stayed out.

DK: Any goalkeeper would be proud of that save with their hands.

JD: Yeah, absolutely. But, yeah, I don't know, but obviously it's disappointing because the home fixture, but, yeah, I think York away was a great day out.

DK: Definitely was. Do you own any sporting memorabilia? If so, what's your favourite and why?

JD: No, I don't think I do, if I'm honest. No, I don't think I do.

DK: Who would you say is the best singer in the squad?

JD: Best singer? I reckon a few of the lads think they've got a bit. I'll go Sethy Chambers.

DK: Best trainer in the squad.

JD: Keiran Morphew.

DK: Now, I've been told that one before. If you could been involved in any sporting event ever, what would it have you been? Why.

JD: Any sport? What, me, actually playing in? I'll probably say probably golf Ryder Cup.

DK: If you could swap places with anyone else in football, who would it be and why?

JD: Say one of the Liverpool players to try play games with them. That'd be pretty special for me.

DK: I'm surprised you didn't say Trent. Alexander Arnold.

JD: To be fair, yeah straight swap. Firstly, steer clear of Andy Roberston, don't play left back anymore, but, yeah, I'll stick down Trent, get in that Liverpool team!

DK: Didn't enjoy it left back, did you?

JD: To be fair, I've done alright if you look at the end of season, doo. Yeah, but I'd play anywhere, if I'm honest. Just get told where to play. Yeah, I just get on with it.

DK: You took all the awards, didn't you? Yeah, it was the Jake Dye end of season presentation. How would you describe yourself as a player?

JD: Good attitude, work extremely hard. Defensively, very sound. Now there's an attacking threat to my game. So, yeah, I wouldn't quite put all-rounder just yet, but I'm getting there. But, yeah, just burn my heart on my sleeve and committed to the cause.

DK: Gradually getting more goals.

JD: Gradually getting more goals. Yeah, more assists. They all come one by one.

DK: That's gradually rising up the list of attributes.

JD: Yeah.

DK: What's one thing you think you're personally known best for as a player and why?

JD: I think probably my one V one defending. Work hard to not get beat as much as possible, but also perhaps my engine. I think I'm up and down that pitch and knackered by the end, if I'm honest. But, yeah, either my one v, one defending or my energy, my engine to go up and down the pitch.

DK: What inspired you to be a footballer?

JD: Just had a football at my feet for a young age. Watched my dad's team Saturday afternoons, so I was always amongst football, always amongst the changing rooms. So appealed to me from a young age. And yeah. School PE, straight away I'm barking at the PE teacher, can we play football? And, yeah, Saturday, Sundays, play for teams and training two, three times a week. So, yeah, football wouldn't stop, so come at a young age, to be fair, but if we're going for an inspiration, probably my dad. Yeah.

DK: And the last one, the best player you played with and why?

JD: I'll probably still go with the best trainer, Keiran Morphew. Just because Mr Needham, he trains like he plays. Formed quite a good partnership. Right centre half, right back. Communicates to me, well, makes my life a lot easier. And I know if I'm missing the ball, he's there to sweep up behind me. So, yeah, probably Keiran Morphew. I'm glad I'm on his team, if I'm honest. Yeah, if I'm on his team, I'm fine. If I'm not, I'm making sure I'm checking my shoulder every now and then.

REACTION | KEVIN HORLOCK POST MATCH INTERVIEW | AFC SUDBURY V NEEDHAM MARKET | 01.01.2024 |

Manager Kevin Horlock gives his thoughts on the Marketmen's trip to Sudbury.

DK: Frustrating day at the office today?

KH: Yeah, look, fair play to Sudbury, they deserved what they got, do you know what I mean? We weren't at the races today but that's credit to them, they've worked hard and obviously Millsy scores a wonder goal, top corner and it sort of gives them something to hold on to a little bit. We huffed and puffed but we didn't ask enough questions, they coped with us and we were under par but that's down to them as well so fair play to them, they deserve what they got.

I don't think they were fortunate in anyway, obviously goal, another 100 efforts from Millsy like that probably wouldn't have gone right at the top corner like it did but they've earned that, they've got in areas and they cause us problems and then obviously we huffed and puffed and tried to push bodies forward and they looked more likely to score on the counter-attack so I don't think they were fortunate, I think they could have been maybe more than one up at half-time even, I know we've hit the bar and Jacob could possibly score with a header but it just wasn't to be today and that's football, it's disappointing obviously but like I say fair play to Sudbury, they got the three points, they're obviously at the other end of the table to us and that helps them massively so they deserved it so I'm not here making excuses, they deserve to win the game and got the three points they deserved.
DK: On a bad day for us, anything positive come out of it?
KH: Not really, I don't think so no, look I think sometimes in football you need that kick up the backside, we've been obviously on a fantastic run, it's hard for me to be too critical of the lads but we weren't at the levels that we've been playing at and that's what happens, all games are difficult at this level and so today coming here, it was a tough game for us and when you're understrength or under-par sorry a little bit, you get found out and that's what happened today.
DK: What needs to improve for Saturday?
KH: We need to defend better I think, obviously our defensive record is second to none, I think we've got the best away record as well so this is a big result for Sudbury but we'll be better than that, I know we will, we've had a blip today, like I said to the lads in there, we're going to lose games of football, no one's going to give you wins and no one's going to hand you titles or enable you to finish high up the league, it's always a battle and a fight and there's going to be moments and times in the season like today where you lose games of football and it's just one of them days today but I trust obviously the lads, I back them all the way and I know we'll be way better next Saturday.
DK: Kettering at home, how important is it that we get a response?
KH: All the games are massive, you can't take your foot off the pedal one bit, we'll obviously be training, we'll be working hard, we'll be trying to put things right and then come Saturday we'll be all guns blazing and I know we'll be better than we are today and if we are then we've got a chance of winning.
DK: They've changed their manager since we last played them, do you expect any different from that game?
KH: They're fighting for their lives I think Kettering at the bottom so they'll be coming and possibly bank up, we'll have to wait and see come Saturday but I'm hoping we're going to play with a little bit more spark than we did today, we looked a little bit jaded so hopefully there'll be improvement in that front.
DK: Do you think the nine day break without a game impacted today?
KH: I don't know, it's just one of those things, that's football, you turn up and you're looking at one team near the bottom, one at the top and you think it's an away win all day long but that's football, I've been in it long enough to realise that's not the case. I want to win games of football but I'm also aware that we are going to lose games and losing to Sudbury today is a blip in the road and I congratulate them, they deserved it but we're looking to put it right and start winning games again.

DK: We've afforded ourselves to have one or two blips though with how we have done this year.
KH: Yes, sometimes you need to put it into perspective, obviously it's a great win for them at the bottom but also in the same breath we're still joint top with a game in hand so we're in a really good position and today would have helped obviously but like I said, we'll win games against teams around us and everything's forgotten about today.

REACTION | Kevin Horlock + Dan Morphew Post Match Interviews | Needham Market v St Albans City | 14.09.2024 |
