REACTION | Tom Rothery Post Match Interview | St Ives Town v Needham Market | 27.01.2024 |

Assistant Manager Tom Rothery reflects on yesterday's game.

DK: What did you make of the game overall?

TR: I thought it was a fairly even game, I thought we played reasonably well unlucky to not get a point I felt but unlike us I think the goals we’ve given away today are poor from our perspective. But we showed some good characteristics coming back where we’ve scored in injury time albeit it’s been ruled out and generally competing well against a team that are clearly flying atm.

DK: It must've been disappointing to lose after quickly finding an equaliser on two occasions?

TR: It’s never nice losing, the third goal is a mis hit and then the chalked off goal kicks you further but we’ve had times where things have gone for us, today they didn’t so we just have to move on.

DK: Did you feel the break without a game impacted us today?

TR: Playing regular helps with rhythm but then you can also pick up injuries so can work either way I guess but as I said I didn’t think it was a bad performance overall.

DK: Are there any positives for you from today?

TR: No not really we lost so I don’t ever see that as a positive.

DK: It must've been a plus to have Milzy start on his return to the club, but a shame that Luke couldn't play?

TR: Unfortunately Luke has a slight groin strain that he picked up at Halesowen and he’s always important so he is a miss but we have a squad so we have to deal with that. Millsy has been good since he signed, like I said at the time we know what we are getting. We worked on what he brings but I think as it showed today at times there’s still a bit more work to do for some players understanding from that.

DK: Do you see today as a minor blip?
TR: As you’re aware we haven’t lost many games this season so it’s important to keep clarity. We’ve played a good side today that’s flying, they’ve scored 14 unanswered goals at home in the last 3 then backed that up with a 0-5 at Mickleover but we’ve come here today and I feel are unlucky to not get something from the game. So it happens and now’s it’s about how we react and for us to do that in the best way we need to be honest with ourselves. I’m happy to have a pop in the changing room when it’s needed but today wasn’t a bad performance. Yes there’s some things we could do better but we’ve have one cleared off the line one disallowed and generally played pretty well but we should and could have definitely done better for their goals I feel but there’s no need for an overreaction it’s frustrating, disappointing as losing games always is but we know where we are.

DK: It must've been nice that we took our goals well?

TR: We played some good stuff at times and both goals were nice. On the day we weren’t as clinical as we have been as I think we had a few other good moves where we didn’t quite show that same quality.

DK: Big game up next at home to Telford, how do you see that going?

TR: It’ll be tough there 17 unbeaten I think and have real quality in their squad.
