REACTION | Luke Ingram + Tom Rothery Post Match Interviews | Hitchin Town v Needham Market | 29.03.2024 |

Goalscorer Luke Ingram reflects on our Good Friday win at Hitchin.

DK: Good response to last week's defeat with a nice win?

LI: Yeah, obviously it's a big win. I don't want to go too overboard on last week because that's rarely happened this season. That's one of them things it's their cup final they've got a good result but if we go and win the next game it doesn't really matter.

DK: We're eight points away from winning the title now, how much does that mean to do that with the penalty?

LI: Yeah, obviously relieved to score the penalty as I've missed a couple and I think we're just looking to hopefully get it wrapped up as soon as possible.

DK: How much did the win today mean?

LI: Yeah, massive win. I think it's always going to be hard, a double game weekend so you get three points in the first one that puts you nicely into the second one so looking forward to playing Sudbury.

DK: Yeah and speaking of Sudbury, it's a local rivalry, you know a lot of the lads in their team so make it even more important?

LI: Yeah, I've got a couple of friends there. They played really well against us early on in the season and got a deserved win. They'll be excited to come down and play us so yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully we can show them what we're really about like we didn't last time.

DK: And lastly, you must be really pleased with the performance from the lads today?

LI: Yeah, we weren't great first half but in the back of my mind I always think we're never a great first half side. I know people get a bit frustrated about how many times we come in at half-time winning and drawing and then we go and get the win so yeah.

Tom Rothery gives his thoughts on today's win.

DK: A perfect response to Saturday, you must be pleased?

TR: Yes really pleased, it’s always important to react after a defeat and three points plus a clean sheet is a perfect response.

DK: A very controlled performance from our lads, what pleased you most about it?

TR: The first half was quite scrappy and played at a really high tempo so at half time we asked the lads to control the game more and play with more authority and show the quality they have and I feel they really took that on board to the word and controlled the second half.

DK: You must be pleased with how we took the goals, did you feel we could've got more?

TR: Once we got the second goal we could have perhaps gone on and got another but I also liked that we managed the game and aside from the last 5 minutes where they had a few corners they didn’t trouble us so we controlled and managed the game well.

DK: It was nice to see Milzy get on the scoresheet, hopefully the first of many for him!

TR: Yes I think that will be important for him, he’s been a good addition to us but maybe not got the numbers he’d like to have but as I’ve said before we knew what we were getting and we are pleased with him.

DK: We started quickly second half, was that something you spoke about at the break?

TR: As I said earlier Kev and I both felt we needed to take more control be braver in possession but also be more proactive, we were a little reactive in the first half and didn’t stamp our authority on the game.

DK: Five games to go now, 8 points at most left to get, would you call it all round a perfect day at the office and a perfect start to the last month?

TR: Yes no injuries it seems also so happy days and an extra day to recover before Monday which helps also.

DK: We've been a lot more clinical over this season than last, what do you put that change down to?

TR: We have done a lot of work on final third play, entries into the box so that repetition has helped but alongside that confidence and momentum have helped also plus Tevan has added to what we do in the final third along with Millsy and I think Seth and Jamie have both developed hugely from last season along with our more experienced and players that have been here for the past two seasons and more who have also stepped up from a consistency perspective.

DK: Hitchin is a team we've only lost to once in the league, it must be nice to continue that?

TR: It’s not really important who you play you just want to win, our record against them is good so if there is any advantage I guess there’s no mental scars there to deal with.

DK: A big all Suffolk clash next up, Monday, how to do see that going?

TR: It’ll be tough like I say about every game. I know a lot about them but I’ll go and watch them tomorrow so we will prep how we always do, understand the opposition and then concentrate on ourselves and what we do. Hopefully we will get a good crowd and a good atmosphere.
