REACTION | Keiran Morphew + Jamie McGrath Post Match Interview | Needham Market v Royston Town | 06.04.2024 |

Keiran Morphew and Jamie McGrath reflect on winning the league.

DK: Well, we're up in style. You must be absolutely buzzing. Yeah, absolutely over the moon.

KM: Unreal to get it over the line, man, unreal. Jamie, hat-trick hero, step f*****g 22, taking us up to step 2 with a hat-trick, mate. Unbelievable. TA: We've got J-Mac! We only need J-Mac! JMCG: Yeah, man, it's unreal. Just to get it over the line is what we wanted to do. We've only got a few games left, but we really wanted to do it today, so yeah, absolutely buzzing.

DK: To do it with a hat-trick as well, that must be mad.

JMCG: Yeah, to be honest, I didn't care, mate, how we did it. Literally, whatever happened, just wanted to win, so yeah.
But like I say, it was pretty special. Unreal, pretty special.
DK: Being the captain of this team must make it even more special for you.

KM: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You put so much energy into something, and then to have it pay off for something that's still so impossible. It's just unreal.
The relief of emotion is ridiculous. It's ridiculous.
DK: You said four years ago about how you want to take this team up to step 2, so that must be absolutely amazing.

KM: It's ridiculous. It's such a small club. We've got half of Needham in the ground at the moment, and to play step 2 is ridiculous.

DK: That second half, was it a matter of thinking when it was going to happen?
JMcG: It was tough. We obviously had chances in the first half that we probably should have put the game to bed, and then they come out second half. They played quite well, had the win with them, so we had to soak up a bit of pressure.
Unfortunately, conceded one goal, but like we've done all season, we kept going until the very end, and able to get the two goals to seal it.
DK: Those three goals that you scored were probably the best goals you've ever scored?
JMcG: Well, yeah, definitely, in terms of the occasion, in terms of the importance of them. There's been so many great performances, not just today, but throughout the season.
The boys at the back have been unbelievable. Our home record defensively is just ridiculous, so that's where it all starts. Thankfully, this year we've been able to back it up a little bit more at the other end.

DK: I believe you guys have been told throughout the game from the sidelines what the scores are going to be.
KM: I knew at half-time that they were winning 2-1, but I didn't know it was 3-1 until we scored the second.
DK: Describe your emotions right now.
KM: It's just relief. It's been a nightmare. To win the league, it's just ridiculous.
Ten points is a huge gap, but you constantly feel like if you lose, you're going to lose the league. The pressure is, for me personally, horrendous. I hated every minute of it.

DK: From where we've come last year, from surviving relegation to now being champions, it's what dreams are made of.
KM: It's ridiculous. I just don't think you can do it.

JMcG: Especially after the first game of the season, since one lost, to come back and win the league is just unbelievable.
DK: We were under the cosh a bit in that second half, but the character from you lads to get over the line is sensational.
KM: Royston, they were good today to be fair.
They were the better team in the second half, until we got the second goal. Obviously, we scored the third. They were a bit scrappy in the back, but credit to them.
They didn't roll over and they could have scored more than one. They were good.
DK: So you had a feeling when you put that third in that that was it?

JMcG: Yeah, it felt like it.
As Keiran says, the second one was a bit of relief. The third one was more over the moon, and just having everyone run down to the corner flag was a special moment. And all the fans as well, obviously.

They've been unbelievable today and throughout the season to be fair.
DK: Yeah, to have done it in front of the fans must be absolutely incredible.

JMcG:Yeah, I think they've been excellent all season. They've made themselves loud, like you look now. They're all still there, all celebrating with the boys. They've been unbelievable.
