REACTION | TOM ROTHERY POST MATCH INTERVIEW | LEISTON 0-0 NEEDHAM MARKET | 28.08.2023 |

Assistant Manager Tom Rothery reflects on yesterday's draw at Leiston and previews Saturday's Emirates FA Cup game.

DK: What did you make of the game?

TR: I don’t think it was a classic but I thought we did ok. We started well and gave ourselves a good platform in the game but just lacked that final bit of quality on the day.

DK: Were you pleased overall with the performance, especially with 1 full rest day?

TR: Think it’s really tough for any team with the quick turnaround so looking at it from a point’s perspective, 4 from 6 over the weekend is a good outcome, 6 would be better though. I felt we had more control in the game and looked the more threatening of the teams.

DK: Would you call it a positive or frustrating performance?

TR: Bit of both really. They have a good home record and like I said I felt we had more control in the game so anytime you come away from home and do that you should be happy but a little frustrated that we didn’t take a chance or create a bit more on the day with the possession we had. I think on another day we have a penalty also, the foul on Luke for me is a penalty.

DK: Would you say it rounds off an overall positive month and start?

TR: Yes I think so especially after the first game. Four clean sheets from six and we’ve had some tough games amongst that six so overall I think it’s a pretty good start. Still things we can do better and will continue to work on but I think we’ve got a good foundation to build on.

DK: Despite being early days how pleased are you that we're currently in the top five?

TR: Like I say it’s a good start but that’s all it is but by starting in those positions it gives you possibilities to build momentum and when you lose which all teams will if you can react quickly it can keep you in the mix which is obviously where we hope to be come the end.

DK: Back in FA Cup action on Saturday, how do you see that game?

TR: It’ll be tough, they’ve scored five in both their previous FA cup ties and I’ve seen on video that they have threats. I’ll watch them live on Wednesday so we will prepare Thursday and be ready for a tough game Saturday but fully prepared for it.

DK: After last season, what for you would be a positive cup run, i.e. get to First Round Proper again or get further?

TR: We need to take one game at a time and try and put ourself in the draw Monday. It’s always great to have a cup run, the money and exposure it brings but you can’t expect to do it every year but obviously we will try and progress and get as far as we can but we can’t do that if we don’t get past FC Romania.
